Our granite transported by horses to the foot of the Matterhorn

Our Maggia Vellutos® granite transported first by horse and then by helicopter to the Hörnlihütte hut in Zermatt, to be laid by 13 candidates for the Swiss laying championships.

As swissinfo.ch reported on August 20, 2014, the renovation of the Hörnlihütte hut at the foot of the Matterhorn near Zermatt began as it happened at the beginning of the 20th century.

Four tons of slabs of our Maggia Vellutos® granite were brought to the hut on horseback. Fourteen horses of the Swiss Army transported our stones for a certain distance, after which they were transported by helicopter because the last stretch to the hut at 3260 meters above sea level was too difficult for the horses.

The new hut floors were paved by 13 candidates at the Swiss laying championships in 2014.

The renovation and expansion work at the Hörnlihütte led to the temporary closure of the hut, which was then reopened in summer 2015, in time for the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. The hut serves as the starting point for the ascent of the Matterhorn (4478 m.a.s.l.) from the Swiss side.
